Smartphones Killed Professional Cosplay Photography?

Martin Wong ·

Key takeaways

  • Smartphones overtook pro cameras. One of the biggest changes in ten years of cosplay (from 0:00).
  • Phones fight the lens advantage. Portrait Mode and multiple built-in lenses (from 1:00).
  • Convenience wins. A DSLR means computer, transfer, edit, back to phone; a phone is snap, edit, upload (from 2:00).
  • Fans expect huge sets. Full-time cosplayers can't hire a photographer every month (from 3:00).
  • It's still your art. Make cosplay photos however you want (from 4:00).

Cosplay photography as-we-know-it is dying and let me tell you why.

FAQ

Are smartphones replacing professional cosplay photographers?

In many ways yes. Phones are convenient, have Portrait Mode and multiple lenses, and let cosplayers shoot, edit and upload quickly.

Why don't cosplayers hire photographers as often?

Fans expect huge sets, and most full-time cosplayers can't hire a photographer every month. Fans won't necessarily pay more for higher quality.

Why are professional cameras less convenient for social media?

With a DSLR you go home, transfer, pick, edit, send back to your phone, then upload. With a smartphone you snap, edit and upload.
